There is a common misconception that people turn to fiction to escape the real world. But, I believe that most of us turn to fiction to better understand the world. This is especially true when it comes to crime fiction. In the pages of a story, we can safely explore, ponder, and process difficult situations. And usually, by the end, some sort of justice has been served. In the real world, not so much.

So, I hope you will join me here each month to dive into stories, both my own and others, and go a little deeper into some of the themes that run throughout my body of work.

Go deeper with me

I often think of myself as a spealunker, trying to shimmy my way down into the psyche and figure out why people do the things they do. What makes one person a hero and another a monster? Is it nature, is it nurture, or is it some impossibly complicate helix of both? I have always been drawn to the dark side, which is why I find myself writing crime fiction, psychological suspense.
